I was doing some cleaning today. New year, new apartment. That’s how the saying goes, right? Well I’m over two weeks late and my apartment isn’t exactly new, but clearing out the junk can certainly have that effect. And clearing out the Christmas decorations can help you snap back to reality. Maybe.
As I was reorganizing, I grabbed a notebook to keep by my bed. I always come up with recipe ideas as I’m trying to fall asleep, Fantastic timing, I know. I’ve started keeping my phone across the room at night so I don’t mindlessly scroll though social media. So I wouldn’t be able to quickly type out my thoughts. Anyways, I grabbed a random notebook and out fell my very first food log. My very first trainer asked me to keep a food log so we could talk about my nutrition. I lasted 4 days keeping track of what I was eating and stopped because I was actually having cheez-its and ice cream for dinner on Friday and couldn’t bring myself to write that down. But then that trainer disappeared and the food log was never spoken of again.
I remember being proud while writing down toast with peanut butter. I had no idea toast offered no nutritional value and the peanut butter I was using was loaded with additives. I don’t think I had ever read a food label at this point. And even though I’ve come a long way, this food log is far too common. In some areas of the country, this would be considered healthy. But it’s just not. And after watching the documentary, Fed Up (highly recommend by the way), I feel like it’s my responsibility to change how people eat. Because change happens at an individual level. It doesn’t matter what Kelloggs or Nestle or the freakin FDA says or does. If people stop buying processed foods, those companies will no longer have a voice. But here’s the problem. The people that are in need of the biggest change don’t read this blog. They don’t shop at Farmer’s Markets. They don’t have any sort of connection to real food and they’re buying all the “health” claims made by these big food companies. I don’t know how to reach these people. I haven’t quite figured out how to share the importance of nutrition. But once I figure that out, game over.
That turned out a bit more ranty than I expected, I only sat down to write about some old journal! But this topic has been weighing on me like crazy. Anyways, here’s what I ate today (the exact opposite of my food log)
Meal 1: poached eggs with purple sweet potato mash, sautéed greens, and yellow summer squash
Meal 2: shrimp fajitas with mexican cauliflower rice from paleomg cookbook
Snack: celery and almond butter (plus a couple extra spoonfuls of almond butter lol)
Meal 3: pesto spaghetti squash with crock pot chicken, tomatoes, mushrooms, and a side salad
